Artist Biography
Dr. Laila Mukhtar Ahmed Adam (b. 1969, El Rahad, North Kordofan), widely known as Dr. Laila Adam, is a Sudanese sculptor, ceramicist, researcher, and educator. She earned her:
BA (Fine and Applied Arts, Ceramic Department, Sudan University of Science and Technology ,1996). MA ("Use of Merowe Clay in Production of Industrial Ceramic - Analytical and Applied Study", Sudan University of Science and Technology, 2007), and PhD ("Mass Production of Industrial Ceramic in Sudan: Constraints and Solutions" , Sudan University of Science and Technology, 2012) in Ceramics from the College of Fine and Applied Arts - Sudan University of Science and Technology, where she now serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Ceramics. In 2023, she became a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), Geneva.
Dr. Leila Adam’s practice explores the intersections of heritage and modernity, rooted in Sudan’s diverse cultural traditions while engaging in global artistic dialogues. Working primarily with clay, including locally sourced materials such as Merowe earth, she develops sculptural forms that merge ancestral memory with contemporary artistic languages. Her approach reflects a commitment to preserving intangible cultural heritage while reinterpreting it for new audiences.
Over the past three decades, Dr. Leila Adam has exhibited widely across Africa, Europe, and Asia. Her solo exhibitions include Connotations at Katara Cultural Village (Doha, 2014), Kunz Raub99 Gallery (Cologne, 2008), and Khartoum: Capital of Arabic Culture (Khartoum, 2005). She has participated in numerous international group exhibitions and symposiums, including the 19th Asian Art Biennale (Dhaka, 2022), the International Ceramic Symposium (Cairo, 2013), the Tunisian International Ceramic Symposium (2018), the Mehmet Nuri Göçen Symposium (Izmir, 2020), and Khartoum Contemporary at Circle Art Gallery (Nairobi, 2017). She received Gold Medals at the 5th Sharjah International Biennale (2001), the International Ceramic Symposium in Egypt (2013) and the 2nd Annual Art Festival for Women (2000) in Khartoum, Sudan.
Dr. Leila Adam’s work has also been shown in Bulgaria, Germany, Kenya, Oman, Libya, Lebanon, and Qatar, in addition to Sudan. Highlights include Contemporary Arab Art Part 3 at Al Markhiya Gallery (Doha, 2017), the Tactile Exhibition at the French Center in Khartoum (2017), and participation in international cultural festivals such as the Oslo Mela Festival (2009) and the Africa Festival in Cologne (2008). These engagements underscore her role in advancing Sudanese ceramic art within international contexts.
Alongside her artistic career, Dr. Leila Adam has contributed significantly to research and education. Her doctoral work focused on the industrial production of ceramics in Sudan, bridging practical expertise with scholarly inquiry. As an educator, she has mentored generations of artists while expanding academic perspectives on clay as both a cultural archive and a contemporary artistic medium.
Through her sustained practice, Dr. Leila Adam has established herself as a leading figure in Sudanese contemporary art. Her work embodies clay as memory, identity, and survival, while affirming its relevance in the global art world. By linking Sudanese traditions with modern sculptural practice, she continues to create a vital bridge between ancestral knowledge and contemporary expression.
